Shaping the concept
This site is being started in order to provide a useful resource for everyone who is interested in open mobile communications and related devices. While there are sites which cover mobile phones in general we cover the ones running on Free Software like GNU/Linux specifically. There are also some sites covering this topic too, but are currently oriented more towards developers than general population or even just curious geeks.
This site should be a user friendly entrance to everything there is to know about mobile phones and similar mobile devices that run on Free Software and open standards.
I dedicate this blog thread to the discussion of ideas for the exact concept of the site. Feel free to make any suggestions you can come up with. You can make any suggestions regarding the site in general or more specific things like sites design.
The current idea is for it to be a multiblog, that is a blog written by a many authors who know a bit about the subject and a "meta-site" to relevant content written elsewhere on the web. For this second part we intend to use RSS feeds, but with a special twist. They will be filtered for relevance with a special keyword.
There are two potential approaches for that. The first is for other bloggers to agree to use a tag called "mobiliberty" in their blogs for every blog entry that they wish to appear on MobiLiberty.com. We would be using the RSS feed of that tag from any blogs whose authors use that tag and that we approve of as relevant.
Second option is easier but less cooperative. We could just plug a few RSS feeds into the site and then do filtering ourselves.
Feel free to suggest which of these two options would be better.
In the future, we may build on this concept and allow some more sophisticated features that may, for example, allow you to vote on the RSS entry that some blogger "tagged" into our system and maybe even comment on that entry.
In addition to the multiblog and the filtered RSS-wire, we are also considering having support forums for people who own or wish to own an open mobile device. Here as well, we are considering two options. The first is to host forums right here on this site. The second is to host these forums as part of Nuxified.org, an existing Free Software and GNU/Linux support community site, and then simply RSS topics from there to this site, so that visitors can know where to come for help and what's going on in the support community.
Nuxified.org is part of Libervis Network, just as MobiLiberty.com.
So this is it for a start. Please if you have any thoughts let us know below.
Thank you
(Note: I attribute the RSS idea as well as parts of others to Taco Buitenhuis).
